The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars, One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.
Pay close attention and you might solve this.
On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for drug dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.
Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention, Simon’s dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?
Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.
The story begins with five students sitting in detention, all surprisingly for the same reason. They all have different backstories, different agendas, different lives, so what brings them together?
This is one of my favourite books because of the pure mystery that oozes out of every page. What makes it so very unique and interesting is that, unlike most other books, all the characters have compelling motives to want Simon dead.
Another thing I love is the intriguing backstories of all the characters, each better than the last. Everyone has secrets to hide, motives to kill. They all suspect each other and become each other’s support at the same time.
With every new twist, every new piece of evidence, the plot becomes more exciting, the suspense more suffocating. You know it’s a good book when you find yourself questioning your own judgment at every other page, racing against time to get to the end. Of course, the climax is something you’d never even consider.
I also really liked the character development throughout the book. No one is who they seem to be at first, there are so many layers to them all. Discovering the characters’ true selves with them is an amazing journey in itself.
All in all, this book is fantastic and I recommend it to absolutely everyone. Enjoy!
